Upma in the house! (Arisi Upma Recipe)
We all remember the famous scenes in the Tamil film "Pokkiri" when we hear about the word "Upma". Kickstarting our very own food recipe series, we would like to start with the most popular dish in South India, called the "Upma".
Upma is generally made with semolina (also called Rava). This blog will look at a special type of Upma called the Rice Upma (Arisi Upma).
The dish is easy to make, and this blog will explain the step-by-step procedure in detail. Make sure you read it till the end.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
- Raw rice (Pacha arisi) - 1 glass
- Moong dal - 1/2 cup
- Bengal gram - 1 spoon
- Urad dal - 1 spoon
- Mustard - 1 spoon
- Cumin - 1 spoon
- Red chilies - 6 in number
- Curry leaves
- Ghee
- Salt
- Cooking oil
- Asafoetida powder
COOKING UTENSILS NEEDED:
- Any kadaai (or fry pan)
- Pressure cooker
Now, Straight up to the process!
THE PROCEDURE:
- Take 1 cup of raw rice, 1/2 a cup of Moong dal, and mix it well. Roast them for 10 minutes in the kadaai.
2. Now, wash the roasted mixture (rice + moong dal) in water and keep it aside.
3. In the pressure cooker, add 2 tablespoons of oil and wait for some time. Now, add 1/2 spoon of mustard and 1 spoon of cumin one by one.
4. Add two red chilies and some amount of curry leaves to the oil mixture. After that, wait for some time and add the required amount of ghee.
5. Finally, add some water (preferably 2 glasses) and salt to the mixture. Water and salt should be added according to the amount of food you are gonna prepare.
6. Take the roasted rice mixture we previously made and add it to this oil mixture. Mix them well. You can also add a small pinch of Asafoetida powder for flavor.
7. Now, close the pressure cooker and wait for 5 whistles.
Tadaaa! Our Arisi Upma is now ready to serve.
